The deferred method in the community is generally known as the wake back to bed method and a several authors say that the optimum time to be awake before going back to sleep is 45-60 minutes.  What is your opinion on this please Michael?  If I get up and visit the bathroom, as in your instructions, and go back to bed I sometimes fall asleep within minutes and sometimes it can take me up to an hour to go back to sleep.  The best outcome for me is is I go back to sleep within a few minutes as this saves time.  Is a few minutes of wakefulness enough time for being awake before going back to sleep?

It is truth - 45-60 minutes much better, but... not everybody can fall asleep after this. So 3-5 minutes can give more experiences for average people. I have proven it at my seminars.

Of course, if you can fall asleep after 1h of awakening you should use it.
