Think I've got it, except...

Yeah, I'm still here. 4 months later. I think I've finally figured out every last one of my problems except for one: recently I've had problems with not falling asleep again after the first six hours of sleep. I wander around for a bit, use the restroom, get some water, etc. Then when I lie down again, I can't get back to sleep. I've been up since a quarter after 3 this morning, and it's very irritating.

In fact, this part of the process, going to sleep with the intent of leaving my body, has been remarkably difficult for me. I find I either don't think of it enough and fall asleep, or think too much and keep myself awake. How do I find that perfect balance?

I have the same problem, wither falling asleep too soon or finding it hard to fall asleep.
I guess the best thing to do is spend 5 minutes just relaxing and breathing deeply till you are really relaxed, and then start to use your intention. Aparently doing it too early can cause some insomnia.

Saying that, my most deep phase experience, with most consciousness i've had, came from spending 2 hours trying techniques and failing, i couldnt get back to sleep, but when i did i had a couple of 'mini' sleeps and then a short dream. When i awoke i had the most amazing visuals (but my eyes were still closed). THough when i left my body i entered into blackness and got confused, so it didnt last long.

Keep trying is what im trying to say i suppose.

Maybe there's a problem with the concept of intention. It shouldn't be as active thinking about the phase. It is some sort of deep and strong desire. It is a background of your thoughts but not thoughts.

If you cannot understand it, before falling asleep just create a brief and very interesting plan of action in the phase. It will create a good intention.

That makes sense. I think I had some partial separations earlier in the night (I felt "two" left arms, so to speak), but it was too early and I was tired to do anything about it. I'll report back tomorrow.

Just remember that a partial separation IS THE PHASE. There is NO REASON to such things if you are not in the phase.

So you ruined this attempt.

Just understand this simple thing when you will get problems with separation again. Overcome this by any means

EDIT: Spent 20 minutes watching part of the seminar you posted a few months back, tried to get to sleep, took over an hour and the intent was long gone by then.

Also, I seem to be having trouble falling asleep on my back recently. Could this cause problems?

Final thought for now: Different people require different amounts of sleep. Could 6 hours be too much for me and hence make me too well-rested to get back to sleep easily?

Sorry about the double-post, but something else also occured to me. I often naturally wake up a few minutes (usually up to 10 or 15) before my alarm goes off. Could the natural awakening mean that I'm fully rested, hence why I'm having trouble getting back to sleep so much? I'd experiment with slightly less time on my alarm, but I'll defer to your judgment before trying anything so drastic.

You can sleep 5-7 hours befor falling asleep.

Do not focus only on the deferred method. You can get the phase after all other awakenings (after each cycles of the night sleep, for example).

An awakening before an alarm means nothing. I usualy wake up before a few seconds of any alarm time.

Alright, and how can I keep my mind from wandering and focus on the task at hand? I have a problem with thinking very spontaneously.

If you think too much while attempting, it means you are not enough focused on techniques.

Anyway, it is a normal problem for begginers, Just try do it over and over again.
