Superpositions?

Post by Jeff »

I've often thought that since the wierdness of Quantum Mechanics completely describes our waking world's objects ,from the smallest to the largest ,that it should also have something to say about the phase too.If QM is a complete description of reality then it must be relevant in some way to dreams.

They say we never experience superpositions of objects,(especially macroscale ones)but I think that we do in the phase.I've had countless experiences of split awareness between my dreambody in the phase world and my body in bed in the waking world. As well I think that the strange objects and 'day residue' of regular dreams could be something like superpositions or compound thoughts.

I conjecture that our awareness becomes decoupled from the 'objective' waking world when we reduce sensory input during sleep or certain other altered states of consciousness. (The 'objective' world could emerge like the 'quantum darwinism' theory says) As this happens maybe we become entangled with other branches of the wave function as they could be equally as 'real' and maybe act as 'attractors'.This could explain the strange nature of phase objects as being other macroscale probable versions of waking world objects that we are entangled with.Like other versions of our homes and so on...

See here:

And here:
http://www.fqxi.org/data/essay-contest- ... ept_09.pdf

Heres just one experience I had that has led me to consider such a thing:

Recently I OBEd to a version of my house. As I was opening my sliding glass door my arms were suddenly outstretched and locked.I couldn't move them and I 'fouled'.When I awoke in the Waking World I immediately noticed that my hands had been clasped together as my body slept. It was as if my mind had 'collapsed' back into the waking world branch after experiencing a superposition of the two worlds.(Maybe because my bodily position helped to weight the probabilities this way, like an 'attractor'.)

I have so many other examples I could post too that seem to fit well this this idea.

For anyone who thinks that QM superpositions apply only to the very small, here are some interesting links that show how this is being scaled up more and more today.Indeed we don't normally experience them without special laboratory conditions but maybe we can during so called periods 'altered states of consciousness'.

I've often felt like our mental associations and the weird phenomenon of 'entanglement' could be related.I can now see that this is a reasonable speculation:

http://www.physorg.com/news154180635.html

This must certainly have implications for dreaming and the phase. It's worth re emphasizing what Antoine Saurez and Nicholas Gisen have stated: "Entanglement cannot be explained by any story inside of space or time". IMO,the same is true for the phase.

More support for my speculation:

"Each mental system perceives a different physical world giving rise to multiple worlds and multiple realities which may be subordinated by one or another more dominant stream of conscious awareness.
Moreover, as the multiplicity of mind can also detach and become discontinuous with the body, whereas dissociative consciousness is continuous with itself, this indicates that the mind is also capable of becoming one with the continuum, and can achieve singularity so that universe and mind become one"

This one shows that QM interference can possibly effect our decision making:

They are interpreting this to be evidence of extra space-time dimensions:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/life- ... CMP=twt_gu

In string theory, they model gravity as a force that 'leaks' between space-time dimensions. This is supposed to explain the weakness of gravity as compared to the other forces.

Some versions have these dimensions as strangely shaped 6D manifolds at every 'point' ,other models put our 4D world within a 5D 'bulk space'.Assuming string theory is correct,I wonder if our conscious awareness can also 'leak' into other dimensions in a way like gravity is thought to? Can our minds access other dimensions of reality in the phase?  :P

This paper about ST that predicted the now observed leakage was linked in the comment section:

Ooooh!  I'll definitely be looking at some of these links for an in-depth discussion when I have more time.  Thanks for posting, Jeff!

I saw this today on another forum and I think it might also support my intuition that the phase is something 'real' as opposed to being a total internal illusion. (if that is even possible)

I believe we do experience something like macroscale quantum states in the phase.......

"They say that the mathematics leaves no doubt that the wavefunction is not just a statistical tool, but rather, a real, objective state of a quantum system. "

Here is a break down of the paper that I'm working my way through if anyone is interested:

I couldn't help but notice someone's reply:

"What are real states? As far as I know I am just a bit of energy, arranged in a useful state. Is this real?

That "useful" is just my idea about this agglomeration of energy..."

He poses a good argument, don't you think? ;D

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the PBR thing, but I'll go back and read the comments too. That quote sounds a bit like idealism I think ?... It is something I find myself looking toward physics to escape from, but always end up going back to because,in truth, the only thing I can say is real for sure is my perception. My perceptions are real ,so the phase is real in this sense......

Even if the wavefunction does describe other 'physical' objects, this would bring us no closer to a solution to the mind-body problem. In fact I think it just adds confusion to it,but if perception is the fabric of reality then the problem is solved easily.

How do we know energy anyway? The visual experience of a voltmeter's reading ? The qualia of pain from the experience of being shocked ? The feeling or visual experience of motion ?

I still have a hard time wrapping myself around the uncertainty principle that lies at the heart of quantum physics.  Probabilities seem to be inherent in the system but then again I wrestle with the idea that there would be nothing (or nothing could be said to exist) if we, conscious beings, weren't around to observe.

And then it hits me that we are part of the system and the possibility that our ignorance is what creates our probabilistic view hits me.  What if quantum theory is wrong?  What if we can't see the bigger deterministic picture (supposing it is a deterministic universe) because we are in it and flowing unbalanced with the momentum?

Hmmm... :-\

I really recommend watching this video.I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this turns out to be the 'mechanism' behind the phenomena of the phase or what the phase actually is itself....Liane Gabora's idea seems to fit well with what I've come to conjecture about reality. She thinks that consciousness is a fundamental feature of the universe and it is 'amplified' in the brain.Probably much like the way that 'fundamental' quantum 'randomness' (or ignorance ?) can be amplified to the macroscale.
